Lifeline Whiteout Walkthrough #11: In the Computer Room

lifeline-whiteout

Having recently played this game through to completion, I decided that in the absence of a proper written walk-through, I would create one here. Warning: Spoiler Alerts! The game Lifeline: Whiteout is developed by 3 Minute and available on iTunes and Google Play. This walk-through focuses on the tenth chapter of the game titled “In the Computer Room.”.  Click here to view the table of contents/list of chapters.

Main Story

Well, I guess this is it. Time to go in and face my destiny.
The access card worked like a charm! I even got a welcome message on the display: “Welcome, Dr. Rosenkreutz!”
Now let’s see what we have here…
There’s a desk with a laptop and what looks like a central mainframe computer.

Which one should I check first?

Decision A:
A1: The laptop
A2: The mainframe computer

Decision A1: The laptop

I guess it’s worth a shot. I just hope it doesn’t want a password, because I don’t think Dr. Rosenkreutz is in a chatty mood.

Lucky me! It was unlocked and on standby… Hmm… Where to start?
Let’s try his email client… His Inbox is mostly automated emails: test results, lots of data. Let’s try the Sent Items folder…

He most recently sent two emails a day ago… Hey, that’s probably around the  time I woke up on that frozen lake!

One has the subject line: “Failed Behavioural Experiment” and the other just says “RE: III.Adams”
I can’t decide which one to read first…

Decision B:
B1: Failed Behavioural Experiment
B2: RE: III.Adams

Decision B1: Failed Behavioural Experiment

Hold on a second. Just until it opens… Ah, there it is.
It’s addressed to Dr. Sibellius! Let’s see what it says…
Today, five specimens were released into the testing grounds.
I have no clue what Dr. Pullmann was thinking!
Perhaps he’s hoping they will learn to communicate without any external influences?
I don’t understand… Does this sound relevant to you?

Decision C:
C1: No. Try another file.
C2: Yes, keep reading.

Decision C1: No. Try another file

Multiple decision points join the story-line here:

  • Decision B2: RE: III.Adams
  • Decision C2: Yes, keep reading

“There’s been a major breach in security. III.Adams stole our helicopter.

We followed the strict protocol, refraining from any type of contact, to avoid contaminating the experiment.

Our sensors show there are several Adams converging towards…”

Hey! Battery exhausted? Shutdown initiated?
No, no, no!
There’s gotta be a charging station here!

Just my luck! I can’t find one. I don’t see any loose power cables around here… so I guess that’s it.
Damn. I feel I finally discovered something important. I guess I’m part of some kind of experiment…
But what am I exactly?
Am I… just some clone?
Was I born in some petri dish, expendable, with no family? What if… What if I’m not even human?
Or am I just letting my imagination get the better of me?!
I’ve got to hope that mainframe and the data storage unit I found on the lake can tell me more.
I need it to tell me something – anything! Not knowing is driving me crazy…

[Decision A2: Watch the security footage joins the story-line here]

The mainframe screen says: “Insert access card.”
I suppose his keycard qualifies.
It’s beeping now…
“Welcome, Dr. Rosenkreutz!” We’re in!

OK. This menu isn’t exactly intuitive, but there are two main options – “Data Log” and “Security Footage”

Where should I start?

Decision D:
D1: Read the data log
D2: Watch the security footage

Decision D1: Read the data log

[Decision D2: Watch the security footage joins the story-line here]

Huh… There’s a lot to read. But hey, it’s not like I’ve got anything better to do!

I’ll read it to you. Maybe you can help me draw a conclusion.
“ALT Technologies – Tersus Protocol Activation Notice
After analysing the data from the Adams batch, we observed units II, III and IV displaying irrational, aggressive behaviour.

Dr. Rosenkreutz has requested that we execute the Tersus Protocol.
The cleanup will be delayed until weather conditions improve enough to allow our units to search efficiently.

All personnel must evacuate immediately, or remain in lockdown until the protocol terminates.
ALT Lead Researcher, Dr. W. Sibellius”

That Sibellius guy, once more!
He is the key, I am sure. I don’t know how, but I know that me destiny is to meet him…

He sounds like a person that could give an answer to many questions that bother me.

But the terminology he uses makes me think…
“Adams batch”? That confirms my fears…

Am I a clone? Or something even worse?

I guess this Dr. Sibellius could tell me. If they’re even still alive…

As for their report…
I saw I.Adams… He was batshit-crazy too, but this report doesn’t even mention him.

The good news is that I’m not listed as “irrational and aggressive.”
What did they mean by cleanup? It sounds… messy.
Do you think ALT is sending units to destroy what’s left of them… What’s left of me?

Decision E:
E1: I don’t know
E2: It sounds plausible

Decision E1: I don’t know

Me either. That’s what scares me.

[Decision E2: It sounds plausible joins the story-line here]

Now, the question is… what should I do? Where do I go?
I have no clue…
I guess there’s just one thing left to do here…
I can insert this data storage unit I found in that briefcase on the frozen lake.

I hope it’s still working, after everything I’ve been through.
Here’s the moment of truth…
It’s not spitting it back out, at least…

Yes! It works!
Come on, come on… open up!
Gosh, I am so excited that I’m becoming impatient.
Finally!
This is my last hope… Cross your fingers…

Well, well! It’s got a digital map of the entire experiment compound! Yes! Now I’ll finally be able to travel without relying on luck and intuition.

But, judging from this map, there’s only one way out of this goddamn place, unless I suddenly learn to fly.

I’ll have to walk straight into the lion’s den – the ALT Main Facility. It’s just north of this station.
Hmm… This second file is unnamed. Let’s see what it is…
Oh… it’s the instruction manual for the tracking system ALT users to “track the Adams units.”
Well, what do you… No way!

Decision F:
F1: What’s wrong?
F2: Are you OK?

Decision F1: What’s wrong?

[Decision F2: Are you OK? joins the story-line here]

I.Adams was right… They’re tracking us using implants in our teeth!

Relative or not, he just wanted to help. He could’ve helped me, if only I had listened!

But how as I to know? Anyway, it looks like they can’t track them – me – because the weather’s blocking the signal.

But once this storm passes? I guess they’ll pinpoint my location instantly…

There’s even a technical diagram showing which teeth are bugged… Here’s mine!

I… I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m gonna have to pull a tooth out…

After I… killed the doomsayer, I took his pliers. I thought I’d use them to rip out some nails or something…

I never though I’d actually have to… do what he did… Damn!
I guess I have no other choice.

Decision G:
G1: Don’t do it!
G2: Pull it out. [Refer to Decision G1 below]

Decision G1: Don’t do it

And then what? Wait for that “cleanup crew” to kill me?
No! I might be some… experiment, but I don’t want to die! I want to live!

And if I want to live… I can’t let fear stop me.

[Decision G2: Pull it out joins the story-line here]

Yes. I’m gonna rip out that tooth. Rip it out and smash it to pieces.
I’m… going to the bathroom. I’ll let you know when I’m done.

[Adams is busy]

It’s over. There’s blood… my blood… all over the bathroom, but it’s done.

I squeezed and yanked, until my eyes burned with agony.
I heard an organic sound… grinding and creaking, somewhere deeper than my mouth… in my head, in my brain…

Until it was slowly replaced by the blossoming of the pain.
Not a simple wound pain…
But a athartic fire, pulsing like a heart, my mind drawing a blank…
Until it climaxes, flesh tearing from bone… and the pain ebbs at last, fading into subconsciousness, leaving a dull burn.

That was… hard… But I did it. I smashed it. I flushed it.
My head hurts. My jaw hurts. It feels like my whole body is screaming at me to rest.

I should get back to reading those files…

I wish I didn’t have to sit in front of a computer. Every part of my body is exhausted, and so is my brain, but…

I have so much information at my fingertips here. Something that could lead me to truth, or at least far away from this wasteland.

That data storage unit… I found it near the place where I work up on the lake.

What if…
I know that I might be fantasizing now, but what if it was planted on purpose?

Someone wanted me to find it?
What do you think?

Decision H:
H1: Sounds plausible.
H2: That’s crazy. There are too many factors involved.

Decision H1: Sounds plausible

Right? I know!
Far-fetched as it might be, it’s still plausible…

[Decision H2: That’s crazy. There are too many factors involved joins the story-line here]

Man, my jaw is killing me. I should take a break from talking.
I’ll call you if I find something.

[Adams is busy]

I KNEW IT!

.I was right!

Decision I:
I1: You found something?
I2: About what?

Decision I1: You found something?

[Decision I2: About what? joins the story-line here]

It was easier than I thought! I just checked if there were any hidden files on the disk.

And there it was!
A single document called: “For V.Adams”!

What do you think now?!

Decision J:
J1: It could be a trap
J2: What are you waiting for? Read it!

Decision J1: It could be a trap

You mean like a virus?
Maybe it could wipe out this disk…
I could lose everything on here.

I can’t! My curiosity is getting the better of me…

[Decision J2: What are you waiting for? Read it! joins the story-line here]

What?
I don’t get it.
It just says:
“Find me when you are ready.”
It’s signed simply with an “S”.
That’s it.
What is this? A joke?

Decision K:
K1: More like an invitation
K2: “S” as in Dr. Sibellius?

Decision K1: More like an invitation

To what?
And that “S”….
Well, it’s got to be Dr. W. Sibellius again.

After all, his business card was in that briefcase…

[Decision K2: “S” as in Dr. Sibellius? joins the story-line here]

But what does he want?
Well, I guess it doesn’t matter. Now I know where I have to go. The only way out of this wasteland is through ALT’s main headquarters.
Which means that Dr. Sibellius’ office will be on my way…
Even if the doctor is expecting me, he’ll be in for a surprise or  two, when we meet face to face.
And I’m not leaving his office until all of my questions are answered.
But until then, I won’t let him get into my head.
I have to stay focused, and sharp, if I’m going to reach that final confrontation.

But now… I’m done.
My head is pounding, and my jaw feels like it’s been hit by a truck.
I desperately need some rest.
I just need to rest. Stop thinking about the pain, about the questions swarming in my head.
Blue will keep watch, won’t you buddy?

Man, A real bed… with warm blankets! I’m closer to happiness than I’ve ever been.

But before I sleep, I have to thank you, for staying with me, through all of this.

Seriously. You’ve been with me through think and thin, and I’d have never made it this far without you.
Good night, my friend.
Blue and Adams out.

[Adams is busy]

[END OF CHAPTER 10 / START OF CHAPTER 11]

Hey!
Are you still there?
I just woke up a few minutes ago.
Unfortunately, I’m not sure what time it is or how lon I was asleep.
But I’m glad you’re here. Last night was… intense.
I had some crazy dreams. This is all starting to affect me subconsciously.

These last couple days have been… Well, I don’t know how to put it…
Nighitmarish. Exhausting. Even painful.

But that’s all behind me now.
Today’s a new day, and I’m gonna stay positive as long as possible.
I already packed up my stuff. I’m taking a white sheet from the bed with me too. Just in case I need bandages or something.

And even with those crazy dreams, I feel refreshed – energised even!
And that’s good, because it’s a long road ahead to ALT Headquarters.
I’m just… not sure what to do next.

Alternate Routes

Decision A2: Don’t turn the lights on!

Wait, why not?
Oh, I get it…
I could draw unwanted attention, but I’ve got no choice.
Without light, I can’t find the computer terminal or search this place for clues.

[Refer to the main story-line – Decision A1]

Decision C2: Yes, keep reading

“From the data I’ve analysed, the Adams series are clearly showing signs of mental instability.
This will lead to aggressive behaviour. It’s therefore my recommendation to initiate the Tersus Protocol immediately.

Hold on. Someone’s banging on my door. It’s giving me a migraine. Please consider what I’ve requested. This is for your own good as well as ours.”

That’s all he wrote… So Dr. Rosenkruetz let in his own killer?
And what is that Tersus Protocol? It sounds familiar…
Maybe I’ll have more luck with the second e-mail.

[Refer to the main story-line – Decision C1]

Decision D2: Watch the security footage

Whoa! There’s a ton of footage! Several months, at least…
I’ll never be able to watch all of it. I don’t have enough time.
We’ve got to see what happened during the time that email was sent from the laptop.

Maybe we can see the killer?
Let’s give it a shot.
All right. It’s loading…
There! There’s no one on the outside camera. Just a bunch of snow everywhere.

Wait! A young man is opening the door…
Wait, something jumped him! Let me rewind and pause… It was… well… me.

Or another “Adams”, I guess.
Let’s see… He draws a gun, but he – Adams – just plucks it out of his hand…

And shoots him – with no expression.
Wait, someone’s coming! It’s Dr. Rosenkreutz… He shot him too, of course.

The two females came to see what happened, and they screen when they see the bodies and… Adams.
Then Adams shoots them too.
Why are they even screaming? No one can hear them…
Do they know what’s coming? Are they afraid?
I don’t understand…
The Adams continues into the attached kitchen… I guess he’s looking for supplies…

Then he simply leaves…
He doesn’t look back. His face has no emotion…
Well, I hope there’s something useful in this data log.

[Refer to the main story-line – Decision D1]

Decision E2: It sounds plausible

Yeah. I guess it’s pretty obvious.

[Refer to the main story-line – Decision E1]

Decision F2: Are you OK?

No, I’m not!

[Refer to the main story-line – Decision F1]

Decision H2: That’s crazy. There are too many factors involved

I know it’s a wild theory. Still, it’s worth checking out.

[Refer to the main story-line – Decision H1]

Decision I2: About what?

About this disk being intended for me to find, of course!

[Refer to the main story-line – Decision I1]

Decision J2: What are you waiting for? Read it!

All right. I’m opening it now…

[Refer to the main story-line – Decision J1]

Decision K2: “S” as in Dr Sibellius?

Exactly! His card was in that briefcase too.

[Refer to the main story-line – Decision K1]

Commentary & Analysis

The process flowchart for Chapter 10 is similar to Chapters 8 in that all roads and paths lead to the one outcome – Chapter 11: Morning – Day 3..

A similar pattern with the process flow is consistent for this chapter, except for the early decision to skip and directly read the email RE: III.Adams, which reduces the story-line by one decision (C). The safe environment of the Relay Station ensures that no path leads to an untimely demise. The shortest route is thus 10 steps:

  1. Decision A1: The laptop
  2. Decision B2: RE: III.Adams
  3. Decision D1: Read the data log
  4. Decision E1: I don’t know
  5. Decision F1: What’s wrong?
  6. Decision G1: Don’t do it
  7. Decision H1: Sounds plausible
  8. Decision I1: You found something?.
  9. Decision J1: It could be a trap
  10. Decision K1: More like an invitation
