The following write-ups are “homework” from a new Timothy Group which began in early December. The format/structure of these write-ups here is an online version of what other members of the group are doing in hard-copy format, using four columns spread over two A4 sheets of paper. Each column corresponds to a different purpose:
- Rewrite the passage, word for word. In my case, I am typing up the entire passage from scratch.

The bible passage for this week is, as per the title, John 14:30-31. Throughout this series I will be using the New Living Translation version of the bible.
Passage
I don’t have much more time to talk to you, because the prince of this world approaches. He has no power over me, but I will do what the Father requires of me, so that the world will know that I love the Father. Come, let’s be going.
Paraphrase
Jesus’ time on earth was limited and drawing to completion because of the nearing evil. The Evil One, whilst lesser in power to Jesus, aims to oppose Jesus/God and thus, Jesus’ aim is to Himself remain obedient to God’s will in showing the world that the Son and Father are one in love for each other. Finally, Jesus’ work is not shouldered by Him along, but He partners will believers in communicating His message.
What is God Showing Me?
The last line is the hook for me. It is this simple casual wording (of the NLT) that shows Jesus is urging us as believers and followers to join Him in spreading the Gospel. Whilst Jesus’ time is limited, and so too is our own, He nonetheless still has the aim to ensure that the world knows that He/Jesus loves and obeys God the Father. The sense of time and urgency also is conveyed through this passage, because Jesus states up front that the time for more talking is running out. The time to talk should instead be replaced with time for action and obeying God’s commandments.
What are the Consequences of Obedience?
This passage does not cover the topic of obedience with quite the explicit reference to obedience. Jesus Himself is obedient to the will of God. As a result of Jesus being obedient, and us following likewise, collectively we will ensure that the whole world will know the love of God the Father. Obedience ultimately leads to action and in this way, love is an action, much more than just a feeling or belief.
