Lifeline Whiteout Walkthrough #2: The Beginning

lifeline-whiteout

Having recently played this game through to completion, I decided that in the absence of a proper written walk-through, I would create one here. Warning: Spoiler Alert!Lifeline: Whiteout game app is developed by 3 Minute and available on iTunes and Google Play. This walk-through focuses on the first chapter of the game appropriately titled “The Beginning”. After attempting to follow an initial structure for documenting a thorough walk-through where each option/decision is explored fully, this format and structure has become very clumsy and hard to follow – therefore the main story-line will be followed from start to end first, with links branching off to explore the different scenarios and possible endings.

Main Story

(static)
…ello? ..nybody there?
(static)
… think… had… accident.
Ple… help.
(static)
(static)
… an… you… me?
(static)
I repeat: …an you …ead me?

Decision 0:

  1. Not really.
  2. Yes, but there’s a ton of static

Either decision will result in:
(static)
Let m… try… thing.
…ive me …ew seconds…
(static)
(static)
Any better?

Decision A:
A1: What did you do?
A2: Yes, much better [refer to Alternative Routes – A2 below]

Decision A1: What did you do?

I got rid of the static by updating the software on my comm.
Damn thing’s been beeping since I work up.
For some reason, you’re the only one I can reach – all the other frequencies are either dead or scrambled.
I even had trouble getting a stable connection with you.
I guess this weather isn’t helping. It’s freezing cold, and the wind is blowing right through me…
Probably because I’m not wearing any kind of coat…

Decision B:
B1: What do you want?
B2: Who are you?

Decision B1: What do you want?

Listen, I can’t waste time.
I don’t know who you are or where you are, but I’m putting my life in your hands, because my situation… isn’t looking so hot.
In fact, my body temperature is dropping fast in this cold.
And I could really, really use some help getting out of here.
I don’t even know where “here” is…
To put it simply: I’m lost and disoriented.

Decision C:
C1: Wait, who are you?
C2: What happened? [refer to Alternative Routes – C2 below]

Decision C1: Wait, who are you?

Also the same as Decision B2: Who are you?
I’m… Uh…
I must’ve hit my head pretty hard… I can’t remember anything.
I mean, I know basic things, but I can’t remember my name or even how I got here…
Wait, I found something!
There’s a military patch on my jumpsuit! It says, “V.Adams”?
Well, I guess you can call me Adams, at least for now.
I can’t really say I remember much more.

Decision D:
D1: That sounds like amnesia
C2: What happened to you? [refer to Alternative Routes – C2 below]

Decision D1: That sounds like amnesia

Also the same as Decision D3: You’ve got amnesia?
I’m not medical expert, but it sounds plausible.
What a nightmare, huh? Stranded in an icy wasteland, struggling to stay warm, and only a stranger’s voice to guide me.
No pressure, of course.
I’m still in shock. You’re the only one who can help me make sense of… all this.

Decision E:
E1: Let’s figure out where you are.
E2: Are you injured?  [refer to Alternative Routes – E2 below]

Decision E1: Let’s figure out where you are

Also the same as Decision D4: Where are you?
Good luck with that!
Judging by the temperature, I could be anywhere from Alaska to Siberia.
There’s a wrecked snowmobile sticking out of the ice not far away from where I’m standing.
That could explain how I got here in the first place.
There’s also a banged-up briefcase nearby. Maybe it’s mine?
Still, they don’t explain why I’m here.

[END OF CHAPTER 1 / START OF CHAPTER 2]

Oh, great! This gets even better…
I’m standing on a frozen lake!
The snowmobile is already halfway through the ice. It’s only a matter of time before it sinks.
That briefcase doesn’t look good either. I doubt its contents survived.
But, since I’ve got no other options, I guess I should check them out.
What do you think? Should I go for the briefcase or the sinking snowmobile?

Alternative Routes

Decision A2: Yes, much better

For some reason, you’re the only one I can reach. Even then, only barely.
The other frequencies might be scrambled. I’m not exactly sure.
There’s not a lot of options on this comm device.

At this point, the text returns to the same story-line, with the same decision options:

Listen, I can’t waste time.
I don’t know who you are or where you are, but I’m putting my life in your hands, because my situation… isn’t looking so hot.
In fact, my body temperature is dropping fast in this cold.
And I could really, really use some help getting out of here.
I don’t even know where “here” is…
To put it simply: I’m lost and disoriented.

Decision B:
B1: What do you want? [Refer to Main Story – B1 above]
B2: Who are you? [Refer to Main Story – B2 above]

Decision C2: What happened?

Also D2: What happened to you?
To be honest, I have no idea.
The last thing I remember is waking up in the snow.

Decision D:
D1: You’ve got amnesia? [Refer to Main Story – D1 above]
E1: Where are you? [Refer to Main Story – E1 above]

Decision E2: Are you injured?

You’re right. Who knows what happened before I lost consciousness?
I’m feeling completely numb, probably from lying in the snow.
It’ll take some time. I’m feeling clumsy in this ridiculous jumpsuit.
Give me a minute to check.
Well, I seem to be fine.
I just feel a bit numb. Maybe it’s a touch of frostbite, but nothing life-threatening.

But I can’t assume that, this could be trauma from an accident.
Speaking of accidents…
There’s a wrecked snowmobile sticking out of the ice not far away from where I’m standing.
That could explain how I got here in the first place.
There’s also a banged-up briefcase nearby. Maybe it’s mine?
Still, they don’t explain why I’m here.

Commentary/Analysis

As the chapter above demonstrates, no matter what choice you make, you end up with the same outcome, the only difference being the direct route or the more indirect route. The following table maps out every possible combination of routes:

[table “” not found /]

Based on the table above, there are five shortest routes that will shorten the story. What I selected as the main story-line is just one of 20 possible combinations and one of 12 routes of the same length (6 decisions). The other 8 routes are a five-step process. Chapter 1: The Beginning, is just that, the beginning of the much longer story that is Lifeline: Whiteout. None of the routes leads to an untimely death, whereas future chapters no doubt can.

These routes can be mapped out in the following process flowchart:
